Chinle, AZ
Chinle is located near the Navajo Nation’s geographical center. Soon after the Navajo Nation signed it’s treaty with the United States in 1868, this community became a center for population growth and trade. With the first trading post being established in 1882, the first mission in 1904 and the first federal government school in 1910, Chinle today has been designated as one of the major “growth centers” on the reservation. The Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, one of the major medical facilities of the Indian Health Service, provides health care to this fast growing community.
Canyon de Chelly (pronounced “du-shay”), is a geological and historical wonder and Chinle’s greatest scenic attraction. During Colonel Kit Carson’s campaign against the Navajo people in 1864, the canyon was a stronghold for many Navajos. Designated as a National Monument in 1931, the Canyon de Chelly is considered to be sacred ground to the Navajo people so travel through the canyon is only allowed when accompanied by a certified guide.
Winslow, AZ
Winslow is located 50 miles east of Flagstaff and just 100 miles east of the Grand Canyon. Meteor Crater, also a popular tourist attraction, is located 15 miles east of Winslow. Winslow is a favorite travel destination because of its spectacular views of the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks. Historic Route 66 runs through the center of Winslow where you can have your picture taken at the Standin’ on the Corner Park. North of Winslow are the homelands of the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe.
The Winslow Indian Health Care Center and the Little Colorado Medical Center provide comprehensive health care for Winslow and surrounding tribal communities.
Window Rock, AZ
Window Rock is located in the four corners area of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, and is the government seat for the Navajo Nation, the second largest Native American tribe in the United States.
The Navajo’s call the area’s namesake, Window Rock, Tségháhoodzání , meaning “perforated rock” . This natural formation is an important part of the Tóhee “Water Way” ceremony; one of the only four places where Navajo medicine men go to get water for the ceremony that is held for abundant rain.
Until 1936, the Window Rock area was simply one of the scenic wonders of the Navajo Nation and a spiritual place for the Navajo people. Then the Bureau of Indian Affairs and later the Navajo Nation constructed many tribal buildings of locally quarried sandstone.
The Fort Defiance Indian Health Center and Sage Memorial Hospital offer healthcare for this community and the surrounding areas.
